Jonathan Coulton is a songwriter and the Contributing Troubadour for Popular Science Magazine. He also maintains a podcast called "Thing a Week", which is just that. Every week you get a new mp3 or video from deep within his music studio/lair located somewhere near the Earth's mantle under Brooklyn.

This week he sent out "Re: Your Brains" -- featuring a fairly articulate zombie explaining why you should unlock that door and let him eat your brains, and with lines like...

Howdy all. ...So, um how you been?

good good... glad to hear it - mmm? oh me, I've been good. A little of this a little of that... you know. I'm still coloring for Girl Genius of course, in fact the fourth collection has finally arrived from the printers and should be hitting stores real soon soon.

It was a great relief to finally see the backup story "Fan Fiction" in the flesh - so to speak. I had been really worried about how the colors were going to come out. It looks good and I'm very happy with it.

Which is great because that means we will have them on the table at Emerald City Comic Con. Where I'll also have my very first convention sketchbook "I Think We Lost 'Em" - for sale.

I took a trip to NYC for the New York Comic Con -- which... had some issues *rimshot* But I got to meet a bunch of cool people like Kyle Baker , Jodi Jett and the lovely folks at Sequart .

I also got to meet some really great fans -- FAN'S!! of My comic! How cool is that! (Hi Kim!). It was very unexpected and a great treat.

I figure that if you read this strip you probably read GG as well, but if you don't -- You probably missed that I've put together an old time radio podcast out of the live performances we do at sci-fi cons. You can learn more and subscribe to the feed HERE. We've received a lot of good feedback on the show, some mentions by some of the cooler cats out there like Escape Pod and the Kick Ass Mystic Ninjas -- both of which I recommend listening to...

Podcasting is a hoot and I'm looking forward to doing more of it, as soon as I can find a good gimmick.

I've made mention from time to time about some big news that I couldn't talk about just yet. Well I finally got the go-ahead.

I like to watch a show on the Food Network called "Good Eats". I'm a big fan of the show and it's host Alton Brown. I switched to kosher salt because of him. -- if you haven't seen it, do go catch a few. It's like cooking with Mr Wizard. His goal is not just to give you a recipe but to teach WHY it works -- the Science of cooking.

So - Last year I did a little cartoon inspired by the show and sent it to a few friends... who sent it to a few friends...etc...

and somewhere in that chain was Alton Brown himself.

Long story short -- I'm designing a new line of shirts for Foodie-Guru Alton Brown. Host of "Good Eats". The first shirts are back from the printers and should be going on sale next week.

The really weird thing about this all is I didn't go looking for the job... he came to me. It's unsettling.

This is not the image on the shirt... for that you will need to wait one more week, but I just couldn't not say anything any more.

Joss had warned us that the film was going to be much darker. I knew this was code for "Crew Death". I did the 'math' and figured it was going to be either Book or Simon (in a last defence of River)

So when Books death came, I was ready. Some folk think that his 'last words' went on too long... but after several viewings I'm ready to argue that. the first part is really about Mal saying how sorry he is for this happening and Book easing his guilt (in a way).

The second part is where we begin to tune out. But I believe it is here that Joss gives us a very big clue to the mystery of Book himself. Books very last words (as I hear it after 6 veiwings) to Mal are...

"...River... I dont care what you belive... Just belive everything she -- "

which - to me - confirms my idea of Books backstory. He's an Ex-Operative. (The fact that he KNOWS what an Operative even is helps that along).

As to the death of Wash -- Man does that sting. After 6 times it is still painful to watch. but it does hold a purpose. Up untill that point we feel that the Big Damn Heroes(tm) are going to pull it off. They are going to beat the bad guys and escape all manner of Hell -- like they always did before.

And when a Reaver harpoon rips that away from us - the whole film changes. Now our heores don't look so big no more... Just damned.

As an aside - I will say that Joss messes up here. We are never given a chance to mourn for Wash. Zoe's first response is breif, and gets subsumed by the on-going action. We don't really get to see that wailing moment that would be just as cathardic for the crew as for us sad sacks in the auditorium. When the next few jokes come along they feel hollow and... I don't know... wrong.

I felt like yelling "How dare you ask us to laugh at a time like this?!?"

My other reactions include...

and now Acceptance.

See... what follows Wash's death, only works because of his death. Zoe breaks the line to engage the Reavers in hand to hand combat. Why? It's such a bad, BAD thing to do.

Vengance.

She is out for blood and nothing but an axe to the back will stop her. Because of this Jayne can't get clear shots off -- which is what allows the Reavers to get a foothold on the room. This forces them to fall back --

When Kaylee says that she's starting to loose feeling from those darts in her neck, we really think she might not make it. This makes Simon try to go back to get his bag, which gets him shot down. Which makes River the only one left to save them (as Inara is busy trying to stop the bleeding).

Wash's death starts a chain reaction... we don't know if any of them are going to live. We really just don't know anymore.

and that is good storytelling.

My question -- what should we read into the fact that Whedon killed off the two biggest advocates for non-violence?

Texas Zombie Massacre

Thursday outside the Frank Erwin Center, a horde of zombies attacked the "American Idol" auditions. No one was hurt.

The zombies, 15 fake-bloodied actors in all, lurched out from under the IH-35 overpass and shuffled toward the Erwin Center, where they encountered the pop-star hopefuls.

Most of the 100 or so young people gathered outside had just been rejected by the "American Idol" review board, and they were talking, singing and waiting for rides home when the zombies arrived. "Braaaaaaains!" the zombies said. Nick Muntean, a UT radio-television-film graduate student who organized and participated in the zombie horde, added, "Television rots your braaaaaaains!"

The pop-star wannabes were largely unimpressed. "I don't get it," said Jacob Gandia, a singer.

Bush implicitly rejected any notion that the global war on God, rather than help quell divine terrorism, might have generated new "god-fearing" recruits.

"We're fighting the enemy, our Lord and God, across the world so we do not have to face him here at home," he said. "The best way to defend America is to stay on the offense."

On Monday, the president spoke plainly of a fight with an end.

"The kind of God that blows up trailer parks and valuable beach-front properties is not the God you can negotiate with or reason with or appease," he said. "In the face of such adversaries, there is only one course of action: We will continue to take the fight to Heaven, and we will fight until this enemy is defeated."

Yet he qualified this, saying that victory would come only by promoting a democratizing transformation of the Promise Land.

"We know that the Heavenly Host will not be defeated by force of arms alone," he said. "we need a strong Will to engage the enemy, but just as important is a strong and secure democracy that will provide an alternative to the totalitarian' ideology of fear and guilt."

Batman Begins review

Eli - love of my life - scored me a pass to a screening of Batman Begins at the Cinerama last night. I was happy to get the chance to go, but not 'pumped'. I have become more and more disillusioned with the Bat-films.

I remember the summer of Tim Burton's Batman. I was pumped. You could not escape the damned thing. It promised a return to the core of Batman--The Dark Knight. The three amigos (Oloro Davis, Marvin Baptiste and myself) set out from the coastal town of Hale'iwa and made the hour-long drive to the Kam Drive-In in Aiea, Hawaii. Kam was an old rundown place that had just replaced the older window clip-on speakers for new-fangled radio broadcast technology in an attempt to draw kids back from the multi-plex theater in the Pearl City mall which had opened just across the street. We decied to use this to our advantage. Once there, we set up lawn chairs, soda laden ice chest and my super-base boombox. Then, just as the film started, Marvin hit record on the tape deck. Giving us a full audio recording of the entire film.

I listened to that tape all summer.

As much as I loved that film I have come to realization that it was a piece of crap. Go. Watch it again.

See? Crap.

Each film after it was only worse. Not until the Batman Animated series came out did we have a truly noble adaptation of the character. The Animated series is now the signpost by which I judge all subsequent depictions. So... The question looms, "how does Batman Begins stack up?"

Director Christopher Nolan has done a masterful job. This is it, fan-boys: THIS IS THE NEW MECCA. That said - you will get no spoilers from me. Go see it your own damn self.

The most annoying thing for me is that I need to wait a week before I can go see it again.

Haunted Nintendo

I brought this System home, and on the first night of playing, about 10 minutes into the game, I began hearing sounds similar to human voices, mumbling to the background music of the television.

Naturally I thought it may have been static or something to that effect, or maybe it somehow interfered with a truck driver's CB Radio System, so I didn't pay much attention to it.

But it continued through-out the entire time I was playing, stop for a minute or two, then start again. It got to the point where I went really close to the TV, I paused the game to try to hear it a little better, but then it would get silent. When I would unpause it, there it would go again.

I know it sounded like there was a conversation going on but I couldn't make out any of the words.

Howdy! My name is Cheyenne and I've started this google group to give folks that read my comic a place to share ideas and give me feedback about my comic. It will also give them a chance to get to know me, and me a chance to know my readers better.

Better. You see... at a recent poker party James Ernest came up to me and told me I needed a better PR deparment. It seems that on his recent trip to GAMA he was showing off his new game and telling folks that I was going to be the artist on it. To which the reply was "oh yeah... she's good"

I am used to this. I've grown up with the name Cheyenne. Had it all my life. Up untill 4th grade folks would often think I was a girl. Thoughout high school I had to deal with clumsy attempts to embarass me by mocking my name.

Even now when my girlfriend Elizabeth and I are introduced it's often as "Cheyenne and Eli" -- to which the intoductee inferrs that I, the 6 foot 4 bearded one is Eli... and that the beautiful love of my life is an exotic dancer (not that there is anything wrong with that - some of my best friends are exotic dancers)

I can not change this perception of me... Alone. If only I could be
famous.

Writer's block is so frustrating it goes around the bend, and cracks funny on the back of the skull with a whiskey bottle.

I really was up at 3 am that morning trying to write ANYTHING. It's so disheartning to just sit there staring at a blank page. And oddly, it's not for lack of ideas... I have many ideas for things that I'd like to do with my comic. But when it comes time to sit down and put pen to paper... Nothin'. GRRRR!

Then comes the doubt. "Did I use up all the funny?"... "was I EVER funny?", it's around this point I reach for the afore mentioned Whiskey bottle. ahhh... Whiskey, you make everyone funny.

In other news. Like the new site design? I felt it was time to streamline it a touch. Let me know what you think guys...

I saw Mitch perform in his last performance in Seattle at the Moore theater, as part of a double bill with Steven Lynch. It was around Christmas and as we left he had set out cases of "Happy Holidays - from Mitch" tree ornaments. I remember seeing 2000 + people wandering through the late winter evening . Wrapped up in scarfs with their arms cradling the sparkling gifts. Delicate nuggets of joy. I'll miss you brother.

Wow.

William Poole, 18, was taken into custody Tuesday morning. Investigators say they discovered materials at Poole's home that outline possible acts of violence aimed at students, teachers, and police.

Poole told LEX 18 that the whole incident is a big misunderstanding. He claims that what his grandparents found in his journal and turned into police was a short story he wrote for English class.

"My story is based on fiction," said Poole, who faces a second-degree felony terrorist threatening charge. "It's a fake story. I made it up. I've been working on one of my short stories, (and) the short story they found was about zombies. Yes, it did say a high school. It was about a high school over ran by zombies."

Even so, police say the nature of the story makes it a felony. "Anytime you make any threat or possess matter involving a school or function it's a felony in the state of Kentucky," said Winchester Police detective Steven Caudill.

Howdy All. This message is coming to you live from Norwescon. Last night we pulled off a great production of the new Girl Genius Radio Play "Agatha and the Sleepy Clank" as well as an encore performance of last years "Minor Heroes". We have also Officaly made our "Big News" announcement, which I would repeat here... but I'm going to let Kaja do that first in her Blog.

Tonight we have our TPU Student Orientation at 9pm in Cascade room 9, which if you were here at the con you would know where that was. Once again, Tommorow at Noon in Evergreen 1 & 2, I have an autograph session. I figure on the rare chance that anybody shows I have prepared a limited edition bookplate that folks can walk off with and paste into their books at home.

A Movie Review/Rant

When I tell people that I saw "Team America: World Police" over the weekend, the question they ask first is "was it good?"

In this rant, I shall try to lay out my complicated feeling in this subject.

Act 1: We get introduced to all the characters, and see a lot of explosions.

Great; loved it. Trey and Matt claim that the movie is meant to be a satire on Bruckheimer style action films and throughout this first act they are spot-on! The music is great. Trey Parker has once again shown us his deft ability to satirize cheesy music. Like "Freedom Isn't Free" (a patriotic country song) or the rousing Team America fight song "America, F**k Yeah". Gems--pure gems. Add to that the absurdity of a marionette kung fu fight scene--comedy gold.

Act 2: Team America makes its biggest mistake, the Hero quits in disgrace -- and it looks like all is lost.

Not bad, as second acts go. The music is still good. Plenty of in-jokes for fans like Kim Jung Ill's "...you're breaking my balls Hans, you're breaking my balls" line, which comes from of the "stem cell" episode of South Park. The capper of the act is a song aptly named "The End Of An Act", a love-lost power ballad, that spends half its time slamming Michael Bay and his craptacular film "Pearl Harbor".

Act 3: Mustering courage and faith, the disgraced Hero returns and saves the day.

Not so good. Here Trey and Matt become truly jingoistic in making their repetitive pet statement that the biggest obstacle in the war are...Hollywood actors (a fallacious argument that I will return to in a moment). Distracted as such, even the music value drops here--the main track being "Montage", which any fan of South Park will recall from the "Aspen" episode. I kept waiting for the song's lyrics to be different in some way...but I'm pretty sure it's the exact same song.

Now--there's a lot of talk on the web about Trey and Matt's political leanings. There's even a group of people labeled by the media as "South Park Republicans". South Park, in spite of its coarse language and base humor, often--though not constantly--communicates the Republican position on issues. A common theme on the show is celebrity, and how it damages the kids of South Park [read -- "US"]. Hollywood bigwigs are helpfully painted as assholes, psychos, whores, and idiots. When they come to town, they invariably ruin the lives of these "honest folks without temptation." This is a constant theme of Team America as well. Hollywood Actors are well-meaning egotists that force everyone to think like they do, and we are powerless to think for ourselves, or to stop them. Perhaps it's satire as well, but if so, Parker and Stone play that hand held very tightly to the chest.

Many people say that this movie mocks everyone equally. It's patently untrue. In a movie about the Republican-championed (and thus far, rather ineffectual) war on terror, not one member of the Republican administration is featured. Not one. No Rumsfield, no Ashcroft, no Cheney--no one. In the last act, there's a summit of the World's leaders, yet there is no representative of America. They are conspicuous in their absence. Oh, Team America does execute a marionette representing actress/liberal talkshow host Janeane Garofalo, and documentary filmmaker Michael Moore is portrayed as a psychotic suicide bomber. But it's apparently beyond the pale to even include the Sainted Dubya in this little puppet film. Yet who else would be a more qualified puppet, I ask you?

So okay, Matt & Trey, you fucktards--listen up. If celebrity and fame preclude you from having a voice in this democracy, then you--and Rush Limbaugh--had better SHUT THE FUCK UP. If being an actor means that you are too stupid to be trusted, then we'd better do something about the governor of California right quick! Or is it only people that disagree with you that deserve to shotgunned in the face for standing up to be counted?

Fuck you, you Fucking Hypocrites.

That said...the soundtrack is great. Buy the soundtrack.

2 - I have been working very hard on my first comic story. A six page back-up story for the next Girl Genius trade paperback!
3 - I got pulled out of town for my birthday.

Gen-Con and Back Again

Hi there boys and girls. I'm back from Gen-Con and finally rested enough to
look back at it with some sort of objective opinion. First of all I had a
great time hanging out with folks I normally only know by their screen
names.

The con as always felt HUGE on day one and tiny the rest of the week. I
think it has something to do with relativity. The more time you have to goof
off the larger the main hall appears to be. And I had very little time to
goof off.

In the course of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday... I ran an Introductory
adventure for Necessary Evil called "Fighting the Good Fight" seven times. I
was only SUPPOSED to do it six times, but I through one more in for good
luck. The feedback I got from the folks that played was positive. Of course
by the last session I was in "the zone" and kinda wished I could have had
the chance to re-do the original days games. Ah well -- the wayback machine
is still on the fritz so maybe next year.

I did get to PLAY in one session, Joe Unger's "Red Rising" which promises to
be one hellva "Hard-Sci-Fi-Alternate-History-Cold-War-Espionage" game if I
ever saw one...

Indianapolis stinks.

To be clear... I don't mean that it has a lack of culture or fine after-hour
establishments for the traveler looking to drink and be merry... I mean it
smells... rEEEaly bad. Even to I, a veteran of gamers cons, this town made
my eyes water. Like some sort of fermenting manure was leeching up from
beneath the city. It stank like one pictures New Jersey is supposed to. Had
an animated rotting corpse clawed it's way from a manhole cover to feast on
the flesh of the living I would at least be able to point and say "AH!
that's where that smell came from". A friend tells me that this is common
not only to Indianapolis but to all of Indiana itself. Good god, those poor
people... the STENCH!

No wonder the setters kept moving west.

Ok... First off a I'd like to apologize to the readers of ArcaneTimes. Yes I know the comic just stopped without any kind of warning. I should have at least said something about it when I realized it was not going to get done. So to those people that depended on my timely strip every Monday, Wednesday and Friday -- I send out a heartfelt "I'm Sorry" ... To both of you.

As for why there was no strip this week, I am working furiously to finish an art order for Cheapass Games before I leave for Gen-Con on the 18th. The strip will be back next week and I may even post some previews of the art I did as well to make up in some small way for the delays.

This Wednesday's strip is a fairly accurate event. It was a Saturday night. I was online at an ungodly hour playing 'City of Heroes' when I spotted Shane's character come up. I sent out a "howdy" message and he said "hi" back -- then he invited me to join his team on a mission in 'Steel Canyon'.

He also said "I tried to get a hold of you via IM -- but you weren't on all day".

"nope" I replied "the IM on my home computer is all wonky, it hasn't worked for weeks".

"Well I got something I want to talk to you about..." He said "can I call you?"

"ok" I said and made sure he had my new phone number.

We talked for a bit, while our superhero avatars stood twiddling their thumbs. When we were done, I had a 3 book deal and strange mixture of elation and dread churning in my stomach. "This was the big time" I told myself "you do this right and you could be up there with the likes of Elmore and Brom in 2 or 3 years -- Screw it up and you are over..."

Then Shane's avatar piped back up. "Hey wanna go do a mission? I got one in the sewers in Boomtown."

"Sure" I said

And off we rode into the sunset -- killing zombies as we went.

I am full of guilt. I have always prided myself on my work ethic. While I'm not the most talent artist in the gaming industry, I like to think that I'm one of the most dependable.

Give me a deadline and I'll meet it. I'll cancel parties... I'll turn down movie passes... I'll say "no" to large breasted women. All in the name of making my deadlines. That is until last Friday.

Last Friday I slipped out of a perfectly nice poker party at Phil & Kaja'a and headed to meet my dealer Freddy. You might know Freddy, he maintains a fairly plain looking storefront in Greenwood called Fred Myers. Everything's for sale at Freddy's... much to my dismay.

They had what I had come for, it was even on sale. 5 bucks cheaper than the list price. I Took it to the counter. The clerk was very nice I suppose. Innocent even. I felt so ashamed I couldn't even make eye contact -- something I always try to do with retail clerks. Outside the store I ripped open the package and immediately began to devour the contents.

They say your first hit is always the sweetest. By the time I got home my heart was pounding in anticipation I could barely hear anything. I stumbled to my study and began to jack in. Good God! I had been warned how powerful it was, how taxing it could be on your system. How dangerous it could be if you couldn't handle it. I didn't care. I needed that hit and I needed it now!

As that first wave of blue washed over me I knew I was hooked. I would do anything to sneak away and squeeze out another hit. and just lie there bathed in it's cool glow.

City of Heroes. I am your bitch.

Monday... I received a nice little check from the fine folks at GameMechanics for the work I did on "Modern Magic", add to that the check that is on it's way from Great White Games for my share of the Savage Worlds Adventure Deck cards -- And I'm gonna have enough playmoney for me to run out and buy me an X-Box, and pick up all those games that the cool kids have been playing for months(years?) that I could only drool over.

Tuesday... while snacking on some Crunch and Munch: Butter Toffee flavor, I cracked a back molar. No pain, but it was really sharp.

Wednesday... I called up my dentist Dr. Hackney (honest!) and got an appointment for tomorrow... For 7AM! Ugh! Then I went and saw a screening for "The Day After Tomorrow". (more on that later) A good movie, the biggest letdown was just me not getting to eat any popcorn for fear of making that molar worse.

Thursday... I hauled my Zombie-ass off to an ungodly 7AM appointment. $540.00 for a new crown, and It looks like I'm not going to get that X-Box after all.

Tommorow's strip is done and ready to go up tonight at midnight. It's part 4 of the Stages of Van Helsing story, and was the original ending. About halfway through the strips, I realized that I had written "the FIVE stages of the Van Helsing veiwer" as the masthead of the peice... but i had only written 4 strips... EEEP!

So a new fifth strip was done up toot sweet and should be ready by the self-imposed Thursday deadline. Enjoy!

A Bold New Direction

Ok the new comic is up for all to read. It features the first apperance of the incomparable Savannah, who will be guest starring in my strip for the next couple of weeks -- as well as the first appearance of the new Cheyenne.

"But Wait" I hear you ask... "didn't Cheyenne star in the first 6 strips with the zombies?" -- that was "Golden-age" Cheyenne, this strip features the adventures of "Silver-age" Cheyenne... a much nicer, streamlined version of the character..

And look for the forthcoming, bitterly honest, gritty, "Modern-age" Cheyenne. You know the balding, overweight, lump of worthless flesh. -- kisses!

Ok... today's strip is of the one joke rim-shot kind. and mostly exists to fill out the week and provide a bumper between the end of the Zombie Menace and the start of next week's story -- My take on "Van Helsing" -- which I saw at a special screening on Tuesday at the Uptown Cinemas. I've wrote one strip before seeing the film and I have had another 5 clawing their way out of my brain since the credits started rolling. so tune in next week for that!

In other news, I finished my art order for PEG's new game suppliment "the Adventure Deck"; which will show off some of the coolest color work I have done to date. And about 3 hours after I turned in the final peice I got an E-mail from James Ernest of CheapAss Games with a full color project that he wants me to work on... I can't talk more about that yet but it's cool and very unlike the other stuff I've done so far.

I have no idea if it's any good, what it's about, or if there is anything close to a theme or plot. So i figure it's about as good as any other web comic. I am just going to let this thing suss it self out. wish me luck.

Pinnacle has announced its new mini's based Savage Worlds game. It is called Rippers and you can get the low down over here. I did some really early design art for the game, and one cool sort of toss-off piece will be a really kick ass figure in the game. So let's give a shout-out to PEG for having such good taste.

I attended Sakura-Con this weekend. For those that don't know, Sakura-con is/was a 3 day convention for anime enthusiasts. it's 4500 anime fans (median age 16) showing off the most elaborate hall costumes I have ever seen outside of the San Diego Comic-Con. the Highlight of the con was meeting the Penny Arcade guys and performing in the Girl Genius Radio Play. Lowlight goes to our table being stuck in the "dealers room 3 ghetto".

Here's to hoping your holidays went well. My favorite gift of the season and my Hot Link of the month has got to be the FireFly DVD

FireFly, for the uninitiated, is/was Joss "Buffy" Weadon's short run Sci-Fi Western. Set five hundred years in the future, the crew of the Firefly-class spaceship "Serenity" will take any job, legal or illegal, to keep fuel in the tanks and food on the table.

But things get a bit more complicated after they take on a passenger wanted by the new totalitarian Alliance regime. Now they find themselves on the run, desperate to steer clear of Alliance ships and the flesh-eating Reavers who live on the fringes of space.

They only got to make 15 episodes before FOX pulled the plug, but I assure you that it had nothing to do with a lack of quality. (in fact, part of me thinks it had more to do with conservative FOX honchos getting their panties in a bunch over the whole "rebels=good/conformists=bad" themes). It had top notch special effects (Emmy wining in fact - Outstanding Special Visual Effects For A Series, 2003). Add to that superb writing, direction, and set design. Not to mention some of the most believable acting I have ever seen on TV, Sci-Fi or otherwise.

Rent it... Buy it... whatever it takes... just SEE IT. you owe it to yourself to see what American Televison could be if only the mother-humping Tyen-shung duh ee-DWAY-BUN-RO at foxcorp pulled their heads out of their goram HOE-tze duh PEE-goo once and a while.

P.S. "FireFly: The Movie" is already in production. YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHH!

Savage Worlds is hitting stores and peoples doorsteps as we speak. Feedback is good all around, and I have a great deal of faith that this system will change the way you want to game. I have never paid much attention to all-genre games. I wrote them off as "crowded". Crowded full of special rules that have limited use -- Crowded full of pointless sections on subjects that will never come up in my games -- Crowded full of complicated character creation laws that micro-manage every point and sap the very life out of a session. All resulting in a game that is never FAST, rarely FURIOUS, and seldom FUN. I am very proud of my involvement in Savage Worlds and I hope that you all give it a try.

Looks like I got the cover! Using color versions of the black and white art I did for the Savage World Action Deck, Zeke over at Pinnacle has made the all genre collage cover for the game... I'm so proud.

Hoody Hoo!
It looks like I'm getting a few Christmas presents late... but oh mama, what a stack of goodies.

Top of the list, Jeff Valent Studios and Pinnacle Entertainment are doing a line of fantasy miniatures based on my artwork. The pieces are for PEG's new game setting Evernight. A boy am I stoked.

After that I am in negotiation to do a deck of playing cards and possibly get a crack at a neeto keen Sci-Fi game to be named later.

I sometimes have to question my line of work as compared to my political beliefs. For those you haven't figured it out I would call myself a weak-willed socialist. Others might call me a left-wing pinko or a long-haired hippy freak. To this I take offence, my parents were long haired hippy freaks. I am much more reasonable.

What does this have to do with freelance art? Most.... oh who am I kidding... ALL of my art jobs are for Role-playing games that are rife with guns, guts and glory. Now my parents (the afore mentioned long-haired hippy freaks) raised me as a pacifist. Yet my livelihood, and my chosen past-time are all on some level, vicious bloodsports. Why?

It's not because I am rejecting the beliefs of my parental generation. I am still very much a pacifist, yet I enjoy the idea of all my friends trying to storm up the beach at Normandy while I, taking the role of the Germans mow them down. I go into great (sometimes sickening) detail of the effects of their attacks. Heads explode like a crimson sea spray. Units cry out from pain an make pitiful attempts at last words that trail off in coughs of blood. And I love doing it...

And if you love doing it too, Savage Worlds hits stores this month** and comes highly recommended. Fast furious, fun. Just ignore that little tickling in the back of you brain that says "Can't we play the game where we all cooperate to help build a better society?" and reach for the auto-shotgun. It's a keeper.

**Update**
The Savage Worlds release date has been pushed back to early '03, sometime around March. Trust me, it's worth the wait.

Welcome from the road..

This transmission comes to you live from San Jose, CA and Worldcon 60.Business has been great and we've made a cool impression on the west coast sci-fi fans. Here is a brief run down of the past few days.

WEDNESDAY
Arrived in San Jose around noon, checked into the luxurious Fairmont hotel. Savannah and I were stuck with a single-bed room but we'll work it out. Almost all of our stuff had arrived safe and sound so we proceed the long an arduous task of hauling it from the Hotel to the convention center. After several hours we had finished set up and called it a day. I discovered the hotel pool and Savannah and I enjoyed an early evening swim.

THURSDAY
The dealers room opened at 11AM and we were immediately surrounded by ravenous fen shoving money at us. After 7 lovingly grueling hours we retired back to the hotel... and the pool. Not for long however. It seemed that we to put in an appearance at the BASFIC room party as "honored" guests/hosts. we stayed as long as we could without offending anyone then Savannah and I made a break for food. This was around 10PM and we learned that food and 10 is rare creature in San Jose.

FRIDAY
More of the same on the floor. Amazing rushes followed by 10 min lulls. After the Dealers room closed we went right to dinner at 50's themed restaurant "Johnny Rocket's" and as Savannah retired to bed I went to see the Lux Radio Theater troupe perform "The Adventures of Luke Skywalker", a funny take on Star Wars as if it had been a 40's era radio play ( Starring Mickey Rooney as Luke Skywalker, Humphrey Bogart as Han Solo and... dum dum dum Bella Lagosi and Darth Vader...). a fun time
was had by all.

SATURDAY
Busy Busy Busy, Larry Niven stopped by the table. Had Dinner at Johnny Rocket's again. Wandered into a Belly Dancing party on the 15th floor of the Fairmont. Swung by the LA in '06 party on the 19th floor.

SUNDAY
Stilly Busy Busy Busy, Phil and Savannah went for Vietnamese food I chose to get my dinner from a local toasted sub-shop. Went back to the LA in '06 party, got sorted as a "Clone Donor Canadate" for the Space Cadets. I then hung around the filk rooms and caught Jeff and Maya Bohnhoff doing a great Tolkein song, set to the tune of the Beatles Come Together --

MONDAY
Not much to say. We put in a few hours in the Hucksters room packed up our stuff and made a run for the airport.

I’ll be on the road for the rest of the week. But if you are in San Jose this weekend I’ll be at the 60th World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) in the McEnery Convention Center, San José, California ( Thursday, August 29 through Monday, September 2, 2002 ) and say hi. I’ll be running the Studio Foglio booth in the dealers room and hanging out with Savannah and the filkers in the evening ( possibly at the same time, depending on Savannah’s tolerance levels ). I’ll also be working on the last of the Savage Worlds: Evernight art so stop by and see me in action.

You either believe in our system of Constitutional protections or you don't, but there's nothing to debate here, especially when your strongest argument is, But he's a terrorist! I just know he is! There was never much doubt that Charlie Manson was a mass murderer--he still got a damn trial.

If you don't understand this, if you have learned nothing from the lessons of history, if you so blithely dishonor the gift of liberty which has been passed down to you from preceding generations...then I guess you deserve the world you will inevitably inhabit. Work, Work, Work
Hey, it's my first "day off" since June 28th. I've been to San Diego and back in that time - pictures will be up soon. Right now though, i've been too busy to even turn in the film rolls for development. In fact my next two "days off" will be spent doing the design work for the Big Bad's of Savage World: Evernight. The funny thing is; this year I made a promise to myself to not to drum up more work... but it keeps coming anyway.

Busting the WotC Wall
For many years I have tried to reach the artist touchstone -- that is, getting my art into a Wizards of the Coast publication -- This months Dragon Magazine has done the trick very nicely. A few months ago, while Phil was away at Balticon, there was a What's New deadline on the boards and I was given the chance to color that episode. It's now out, and you can find it in Dragon #298. Check it out I'm very proud.

Added new parts to the site. Photos from the AVN porn convention are up -- in the photos section,
and 10 peices from Freeloader have been added to the Published Work section of my Portfolio.
